Curious: is this purely by tag or do you aggregate related topics? I ask because you exclude jQuery, which is JS (I guess React, etc too).
Right, I was wondering if there was an inflection at which a language is so commonly known that questions about its libraries dominate.
It's a common complaint in the JS community that people know the libraries better than they do the language.

Would more copies really make sense if you can increase your own extension and resilience through other means?
Natalie: I’m assuming you would care about your own continuation. So you need a way to survive local catastrophe.
Simon: Ah, but are those not meatspace assumptions? Does further alterity not increase the risk for conflict?
Kin altruism might not mean much if you can reprogram yourself at will. Assuming it would mean anything long at a 50µs reproductive rate!
I would further assume that a superintelligent AI would understand evolution at least as well as we do. Could it not benefit from it…
…through internal simulations better than through extrinsic reproduction?
There are good scaling/distribution reasons why in meatspace twice of you beats you twice as big — I’m not sure they hold so well for AI.

The question I would ask is if it's a no-brainer why does it need the W3C to make it happen?
Either it is a no-brainer and we can just make it happen, or it's not and W3C might just have tried and failed.
You would just get the same shit but without patent protection and (rather relative) transparency.
If W3C didn't care this would have been ratified over two years ago. A good question is why, despite caring, the covenant didn't work.
And did EFF actually help or hinder.
I don't believe I have ever seen W3C management do such a thing. Such a bizarre claim would require evidence.
That doesn't require it to be at W3C. Nothing prevents a community-driven covenant.
♥ 1
No. That's the optimal option, but not the only one. Nothing prevents a separate operation to drive signatures.
♥ 1
I don't understand your point. Somehow the W3C could convince 400 companies to sign something but we can't get the same for small n?
Most members don't make or use DRM tech, we don't need their signatures.
"Love". Again, trolling language trying to hideous lack of evidence.
Clearly that purported leverage is not enough. The options are to try something or give up.
♥ 1
Getting commitment from even just one company is better than nothing. Positive image, name and shame, etc can add up.
The leverage of Recommendation was already in play to try to get something better out of EME in 2014. It didn't work.
♥ 2
I say purported because you are imagining it stronger than it is. W3C is not passive, if they hadn't tried EME would have been Rec in 2015.
If you insist on going for this comparison, then your idea of leverage is the Maginot Line.
Every decision is formally of the Director. I'm not sure what you're trying to imply.
You discover now that the Benevolent Dictatorship model has issues?
I was in those discussions, it was my job to be. I can attest no one in W3C management pushed for DRM. It's just not true.

...politics in W3C, I really don't see how the MPAA could have any traction. They just don't have the influence. Netflix, more, but not...
♥ 1
...anywhere near enough or pull something off on their own. This decision does not happen without browser vendors behind it, plain & simple.
♥ 1
Can't give you that, it happened more recently. I can speculate though. The MPAA bogeyman theories don't hold water, IMHO.
I would expect many companies to object to a legally binding document they don't perceive as vital to them. It's asking for exposure...
...in exchange for a public good they don't feel strongly about. That alone could almost derail it. Add browser vendors and it's dead.
But they almost did not. It was a massive battle. And the IPR rules are directly useful to many companies that use the Web. Incentives!
I don't think it's fatalistic. It was always going to be uphill though.
Absolutely. Were there any calls to boycott them and exert pressure where it mattered? I didn't see any...
♥ 1
I'm not defending BDFL, just pointing out it's not new.
Now, imagine the Director passes the covenant. What happens when browser vendors start walking?
That are DRM vendors. One isn't.
♥ 1
Who’s fatalistic now? :) Browser qualities are within breathing distance of one another, it’s not like it’s a serious sacrifice.
♥ 1
That’s from @w3cmemes.
Is it not? Wanting something but refusing to touch one’s own comfort to move things isn’t exactly brillant.
«I’ll give money to DRM, use Chrome, and let TBL just clean up!
…
Wait. What went wrong?»
🤔
W3C can *never* do anything without the community acting in the same direction. That’s *precisely* why WHATWG happened.
There is no Web police. It’s not that the onus is on activists — it’s on everyone who cares.
♥ 1
That much is entirely true. And it would deserve a post-mortem.
I'm not blaming, it's just facts on the ground. My hindsight take is that W3C should have organised the community again browser vendors.
That's a bloody risky path though, but I see nothing else that might have worked. I know I personally shied away from it.
Ok, and what happens next? Say, in the wake of that decision Apple leaves. EME goes to a separate consortium, without IPR. Is it a win?
♥ 1
Because it would have been the XHTML 2 of legal agreements?
So win morally but die as an organisation? Maybe. Again, I’m not sure there is a win in there.
♥ 1
That happens a lot in Web standards, as you well know.
Of course it could have. It boils down to whether tech that is key to the Web experience should be without IPR, a11y, etc.
The net result would be just the same in DRM penetration, but worse off eg. for a new entrant.
At the end it boils down to a calculus over the value of a purely moral victory that carries pragmatic cost.
Just assume rationality: what would cause an org that has fended off DRM for ages to agree to a form of compromise?
♥ 1
I’m not sure what that even means.
Brendan — you don’t need to explain that to me. If you have the magic wand that would make it sail past the membership, don’t tweet — do it.
He’s not my boss, I left years ago. I’m not refusing to hold anyone to account. Were there mistakes? Sure. Poor negotiation? Very likely.
Would I have done some things differently over the past two years? I lack internal knowledge, but it’s certainly possible.
What I am objecting to is the disproportionate degree to which W3C is expected to solve a problem but not those who cause it.
If nothing else it’s simplistic and won’t help prevent the next DRM attack on epub (rejected by W3C — so far). What could we do differently?
My primary interest here is in making sure this ends now — & yes, I don’t think it can happen without the Web community pressuring upstream.
With that, I don’t think we’ll go much further here; I’m actually at an interesting (unrelated) conference; so I bid you a good day!
Yup. I specifically threatened no Rec over the CDM issue. It led to a long stare-down that was still ongoing when I left.
♥ 2
Yes, and CDM was discussed all the way into 2016, IIRC. You know, the time-scale of standards and all that :)
And I defended it. Mike Smith & I threatened EME to stay stuck in CR if CDM interop wasn’t addressed. It was not enough.
