Mozilla is laying off 250 people and is basically on life support. Their primary competitors:
* Bundle their browser in a leading operating system.
* Forbid alternative browser engines on their platform.
* Use their massive Web properties to drive downloads of their own browser.
Chrome: the only browser that tracks you more than any site you might visit.
I mean, yes, we’re all in awe of how Facebook and Google colluded through a direct agreement to own advertising together on top of their respective anticompetitive practices.
But what I really want to find out is: which Star Wars character did they name that deal after?

• MIT partly hosts W3C, but withdraws Dec 31
• A W3C nonprofit needs to take over on Jan 1
• MIT has assets (dues, contracts, IP…) to transfer to new W3C
• I was elected to the W3C Board & in the negotiations
Two weeks from cutover it's going… poorly. 🧵
The Web has become dominated by proprietary aggregation technologies: AMP, Apple News Format, Facebook Instant Articles, MIP, and now Web Bundles.
These formats cater to the needs of large platforms; not users, not publishers. It’s unsustainable.
We need to change this.
