This is a rare occurence but I think @mnot has it backwards. We have more APIs and formats for a decentralised self-hosted whatever than one can humanly read. What we’re missing is a gritty app that extends the adjacent possible.

I could even see this starting from a Git client! First you handle some code together, you get a way to spin up a repo in common with others. Then you chat in there, make some bits public. Git becomes the means for sharing and publishing instead of being focused around code.

Before you know it you have a bunch of client and a crufty standard that makes all authors of previous APIs and formats cringe and that someone will have to spend five years cleaning up. But it works!
