There are several problems. One is that this is just AMP v2, if you think it's unAMPing then you missed the problem with AMP. I don't speak for the NYT but the way I see it, it's in the business of maintaining its independence and being worthy of the trust of its readers.

Technology that flows yet more power to the already too powerful, but less visibly, contributes to harming the former. That enables third-party tracking at this scale harms the latter.
