The number of deeply experienced Web people reaching out after the threads on Google's WebBundle saying they think the Web is dead, just hasn't stopped moving yet… The worst part is how hard it is to disagree. Things have been grim before, but never this grim.

"Never bet against the Open Web," we used to say. I'm not even sure who came up with that first. But what do you bet on when the Web isn't open any more?

You're 100% right. There are many hypothetical ways in which this could be good. The problem is that based on empirical reality, it won't be. It's a lot to detail over Twitter, but I'll try to summarise some notes.

I keep thinking about what to do after the Web is gone. So many of us wanted this to be good, for everyone. Losing it is certainly bad for civil society. There's plenty more worth standing for, but none of it with so much promise, none of it the medium for all humankind.
