I’m not sure what’s sensationalised here? There’s a huge difference between collecting local log data and transmitting it remotely: the former is purposeful, the latter is a violation of privacy. Doing it unencrypted is additionally woefully incompetent.

Now, of course, if your benchmark for sensational compares to, say, Google, then evidently what Apple is doing here is nowhere near as bad as permanent monitoring of geolocation and collecting a user’s full URL history. But Google is a very low bar in data protection.

At the end of the day, the one question that matters is: who is the OS working for? The OS is expected to be the user’s agent, it must by definition be trustworthy and loyal. Breaking that promise is dangerous ground.
