One more example of the marketing industry shooting itself in the foot (or, given that this comes from the cringeworthy “Marketers for an Open Web”, MOWing itself down). If Google prevents others from tracking while tracking itself, there are two options: 🧵

1. Allow everyone to track. This is what MOW are proposing. This makes the name of this small group quite ironic since third-party tracking is inherently a violation of trust and trust is the most important value of the open web. So that one’s off the table.

2. Prevent Google from tracking. This is a strongly pro-consumer option that is also aligned with the values of an open web and that prevents problems of structural anticompetitiveness in the data market. (MOW’s proposal helps the biggest.)

Just as with the similar complaint in France against Apple, I certainly hope that @CMAgovUK will see that this complaint goes against fundamental rights and does nothing to help competition — but GDPR enforcement could solve both.
