Has anyone written on why hackers went, for all intents and purposes, extinct? It's easy to blame various evil empires, but the eradication was so swift and complete, there has to be more. Elitism? Lack of diversity? Toxic in-fighting? Bureaucracy is really stronger?

I think that's some of it, I mean you take some kids and you give them tons of money, make them feel important, you can be sure they'll eat your mission up and think it's for the users, but it feels like blame shifting too.
