No, I don't mean underground hacking culture, on the contrary I mean people who consider themselves hackers existing in sufficient numbers and with enough visibility that public outlets felt the need to explain it regularly, with clichés.

I'm aware of lots of smaller groups here and there, but they feel like a lot of splintered microcultures rather than the working doctrine of major programming languages.

It was a pretty bad book (IMHO) but if the Hacker Ethic came out today I'm not even sure that people would know what it's about (or care)? Back then it was debated quite extensively, even at times in the mainstream.
