I understand how we landed there, there are logical steps along the way. What I'm saying is that we should pause and take stock. Is this what we want? Because, from first principles, it looks like in the long term it really is going to suck.

Browser vendors know better than to discount long-term maintenance costs, and I really don't see how we get anything other than underinvestment in this given the structure of how it's set up now.

There are options! Something more PARAKEET-like that offloads most (ideally all) of the auction work to parties that need it to work well should be more robust. Also, based on the recent discussions on here we could get rid of auctions too :)
