I think the problem is that for that to happen, you have to trust that others will play by similar rules. The US's total lack of antitrust enforcement and data protection over the past decades are basically equivalent to illegal subsidies under WTO expectations.

Sharing an open Internet with a rogue actor like that is like opening up trade with a country that ignores all safety and ecological rules, and subsidises national champions. You can't win.

We should have a principle of no interoperability without institutions to support capture-resistance. Something like that!
