You're absolutely right that we have to transition — but we have to transition to something that works and has a sustainable future. That requires working towards a Consortium that offers more than a place for Apple and Google to sort things out.

I am keenly aware that outsize influence comes from control over infrastructure. That's why I propose to solve this problem instead of just leaving it by the wayside. We can broken browser/search dynamic or we can decide the Web is Google's other proprietary system.

There isn't really an option that doesn't simultaneously keep the Web open and doesn't address monopolistic and unfettered control over the infrastructure. I mean, if we don't, what is it that a standards organisation does exactly? Rubber stamp things?

You seem to be assuming that I don't know that this is hard, and that I don't understand that it needs money. I do. I have more detailed plans on the infrastructure funding side for ads, search/browser, and (partially) social.

This is the simplest change that I have been able to devise that doesn't pretend we don't have a power problem. I would be absolutely overjoyed to consider better options, I'm sure they exist. But what I don't see is the value of having a W3C that's just decorative. Why bother?
