The little-known Spiderman Corollary is that you can't have a lot of responsibility if you don't have much power. Once someone else's script loads, publishers have almost no power, and they have no visibility into what makes money to pick what's worth doing.

My point here isn't to absolve pubs from responsibility: on the contrary, pubs should be given the power to fix this. We'd get innovation at the edges, a much cleaner system, and a clear way to blame people when things go wrong.
