In this era of democratic backsliding, there is little that's more worrying than Google's irresponsible data handling practices.

To put it more clearly, both my French grandparents spent the entirety of WWII fighting Nazis. Had Google been a German company in the 1930s, they'd be dead. It's worth honest consideration: do we trust the state of American democracy enough to be comfortable with it today?
