Do you know how open these are in practice to non-academics?
We need to have the conversation that technologists aren't having: how do we make search on the web not be terrible? It's good that Google's monopoly is in court but we need to think about durable solutions.
It may be less challenging than you'd think.

That's a fair point. I don't think that they're necessarily bad for users (though in some cases context and the right authority matter and Google doesn't reflect that well) but they're extractive. The solve would be to do them but pay for the content, even a tiny bit.

The overarching idea is to make sure that the web is a regenerative system, you don't take out more than you put in. This is what Google is particularly bad at, unfortunately.

Google testified in court today that click data does not matter to search.
I take it this means that we can now remove the ping attribute from HTML?
