"Coin Locker Babies", by Ryu Murakami. I usually find growing-up/coming-of-age stories boring, but this one is very enjoyably fucked up (and excellently written).

While we're here: please stop comparing Ryu and Haruki Murakami. Two brilliant Japanese authors have the same family name. Get over it.
