I agree on search, new channels do split the pie, I just don't think that stopping at that is a sufficient characterisation. Limits to the use of content is one, but limits to the use (and secondary reuse) of personal data is a big other.

Advertising works by selling access to an audience. If in the act of facilitating the sale you also acquire rights to that audience such that you may render it accessible without the party that built it, you will starve that party.
The fact that newspapers are clearly acting against their own interests in letting platforms do that might be an indication that they are forced into this deal, and dying from coercion more than from competition.
