I don't think that what Brave is doing is what Tobie suggested though. He talked of taking Chromium to an open governance model, evidently this would have to remove it from Google, not to involve working downstream.

There is no doubt that it would be difficult, but I feel the question is worth asking seriously. It is not clear that users or the web are benefiting from competition at the engine level, they would possibly benefit more if those resources went into competing higher up the stack.

There is also no doubt whatsoever that Google owning Chrome is severely detrimental to both the web and its users. Moving it out would be a net win.

It would certainly be difficult and adversarial, and it would need a hell of a solid governance structure with uncompromising leadership, and that's just the first year. But it's worth at least *thinking* about.
