I think it can shift back, but we don't seem to be at that point yet. Privacy, not as tools for secrecy but as socially-shared norms on the appropriate flows of data in the digital era, probably has to be the next big innovation.

Without that we will hit a wall with data in which it is just too dangerous and damaging for the technology to become more embedded. But that's not baked yet. Regarding the shift you described upthread: @shoshanazuboff captures it well in Surveillance Capitalism.
