I don't think that the "it's free, therefore it has to be this way" is an argument that is as strong as it's made to be. Free and unsafe, free and unsustainable just entrench models that will hurt more the longer they last.

This isn't to say that we shouldn't try to maintain free services, just that's it's not a no-brainer. In some ways it is similar to countries that have subsidised the price of gas. They all suffer when reality comes calling.
