Publishers need to exist on AMP, it's a huge chunk of our search referrals so for many it's life-or-death. AMP is, shall we say, idiosyncratic to deal with. It had a substantial cost in engineering. That's engineers who aren't making things fast.
So I don't think there's much of a path to a fast Web that doesn't include nuking AMP, or at least Search accepting to promote the nonproprietary option as well instead of its walled garden.
