I have backups! And a good thing is that I found out they weren’t working as well as I thought they were. But that’s how I figured the issue out. Nothing was coming up for search variants on “Catalina deleted files”. But Time Machine refused to restore…

So I poked around and noticed that the root dir was read-only, with various mount indirections, which is why restoring couldn’t work. Then searching for “Catalina root read-only” brought up solutions.
