Hmmm, that's a very interesting angle, I like that! Also fragments are easier for recommendation systems (because they can iterate at a very granular level, which longform can't), and recommendation/micro-targeting are... two uses of the exact same thing.

I love your idea of loss of social/collective from the fragmentation of emotions & narratives. I think the virus metaphor is the wrong one, though. Different stories prosper in different environments. Thor: Ragnarok would struggle to find an audience as an Austen novel.

The SM narratives aren't inherently bad, but that's what survives best in the SM environment. Also, Dawkins killed virus metaphors for me. So, uhm, when's the book available?
