I completely agree, there are just way too many hurdles to participate in standards today. To be clear: I don't think that the WICG is a complete failure, I think it has helped make standards a little more accessible to a few more people, and I think it could improve still.

It did however turn out to be harder to fix than this stupid optimistic guy thought. I handed it over to others in the community ~5 years ago so I'm not entirely on top of current status but here are some stats.
