I agree with this take but I also see a deeper connection between surveillance and AI (as practiced today): both are rooted in the idea that technology should decide for users what's good for them. Nothing good can come from this ideology and it needs to be burnt to the ground.

If more people read it & link to it, it must be more relevant, right? Wrong. Algorithmic curation should enhance autonomy — but the norm is to implement it in ways that instead substitute for it. Poorly.

I could go on (you know not to get me going about Netflix...). It's what you get for letting engineering drive products: users come second.
