I came to it from a different angle, but similar overall story. I grew up very much on the far left, moving around Trotskyism and anarchism. In many ways, that's still where my values are (and always were). The net gave me the impression we could basically just do it.

I added a free market component to that set of beliefs and a form of laissez-faire for tech based on my experience online. That eventually brought me to co-found the "Mouvement Libéral de Gauche" (the French sense of "libéral" which is closer to libertarian though not quite).

And then later drifted towards the Pirate Party. That wasn't very functional :) Anyway — the core problem is that none of these featured a solution for the provision of institutions to manage our digital commons. And from there, only bad things can happen.
