Structural issues aside, this ad appears to be targeted at logged out users in privacy-friendly browsers. It's revealing to see that Google is funnelling these users off the Web and into its app. It's like privacy on the Web is working or something!
Whenever I point out that Google just straight up helps itself to other people's work and property, people think I exaggerate. Surely, if it were true, someone would do something about it! Here's Google using AMP to force overlay ads for its own products atop publisher content.
