You seem to be rat-holing into a very specific tree in response to a blog post that's specifically about the forest. But yes, and this extends well beyond journalism: capturing value from diverse sources to finance uniform systems.
Sorry, I'd meant to continue this thought but was interrupted by all the fun in WebApps and then forgot. Trying to formulate this in a neutral way because it sounds invidious but I'm sincerely curious (and understand if you can't answer):
If information from our audience isn't that valuable, why insist so constantly on collecting it and being granted the rights to reuse it? We've asked things like: removing controller terms from Pixel, stop tracking from login SDK, stop using in-app browser — always "no".
If that data isn't valuable, it would be better from the perspective of legal risk, reputational risk, and user data protection to not collect it at all, no?
