In this vein, I'm curious as to whether you've found Agre's capture vs surveillance distinction useful? I think it helps escape metaphors that might not be pointing to the right solutions.

Agre's "Surveillance and Capture" is worth re-evaluating in today's context. Much of what we're dealing with looks more like capture than surveillance, and thinking about it as such is useful. He also helps define legibility better. blogs.commons.georgetown.edu/cctp-506-sprin…
