Yahoo Pipes is exactly why this went wrong. We had an ecosystem of open, interoperable services that were supposed to be brought together with "mashups" but there was never any business model for this arrangement. Shockingly, that didn't pan out! 🧵

So instead the companies that didn't have qualms monetising data and building closed, opaque systems took over. That's how data became "the business model of the Internet." And with that come capture, surveillance, loss of agency.

Wanting to put include money as a fundamental primitive on the Internet is likely the only way we'll get that open, interoperable world to work, and to replace the surveillance megalodons. But cryptocurrency isn't necessarily the best way to do that.

We need a monetary system designed to build access for the greatest number, not for plutocracy. That's why I think there's possibly greater promise in @Interledger than in the web3 stuff.
