Yeah, I'd expect random and you choose filters and sort (eg. price, reviews as @mmitchell_ai says, or even weight, how many other people have bought it in your neighbourhood, etc.). I don't know if it's what they mean, but my guess is a clumsy empowerment-to-management spectrum.

At one end you get basically a SQL interface and at the other a black box sort obeying someone else's opaque KPI. The former is hard to use but the latter only works if you believe in the totalitarian view that there's one best way to organise information.

The text you cite seems to offer a choice between two bad extremes :) I hope we can fix this in smarter ways.
