When entering a topic I go for breadth: follow all the interesting links or references, find all the people tweeting, etc. but stick mostly to abstracts and scanning. Patterns emerge: people who are all saying the same things or engaging in repeats of the same boring debate.

Also people who have a sharp point of view, a voice, an ability to explain will tend to stick out. I stick with those and iterate over time in smaller batches. No silver bullet, but I think broad+shallow and trusting you'll see patterns helps.
