One advantage of corrupt states is that you know who the corrupt leaders are and they share a geography with the people. It's dangerous and far from foolproof, but it's there as a potential check.

I certainly don't disagree that we need much better non-state institutions for the digital world. I'm not sure that the current world of crypto is showing a credible way forward, though.
