I have disagreements with Zuboff, but on this I think she isn't entirely wrong. There's a sense in which more of the same really is different. It's entirely true that Google or FB aren't Internet companies, rather they're the epitome of what an 18C corporation wanted to be.

In that sense we are still living in very much the same old colonial exploitative system. Reading "Reconsidering Reparations" made that brutally clear to me.

But the totalising nature of data exploitation makes things different. It used to be that school, prison, asylum were the only total institutions in which everything is built and controlling. Now, everything digital is that. I think it's true that it makes things different.
