That's awfully kind. I have to point out that many of my insights are stolen straight from @EvanSelinger, @hartzog, or their co-conspirators :) This is *such* a good question though. Totally agreed on consent for sure. I need to go feed the small humans, but quick notes:

Convenience! I still need to find a good articulation for this, but convenience is a key component of the domestication of humans (by humans). Domestication (of animals, plants, etc.) can be seen as the exchange of convenience for pliability.

The idea that you can build for everyone without building by everyone. It's not even a question of "values" or of being democratic: it just plain doesn't work. Related: the idea that "democratisation" is making available to a lot of people without giving rights over the thing.

The notion that A/B testing is a scientific result that reveals what people want. You can't have science without a theory! A/B testing gives you no theory, just very shallow knowledge of how people behave, with a million caveats and nothing actionable beyond the immediate.

The idea that you need to trade in data in order to target advertising efficiently. Advertising can be good, but it really doesn't require the sort of nonsense that became the norm.

The contention that fluid data sharing is better for competition — as far as I can tell the opposite is true: berjon.com/competition-pr….
