I'm with you, but look at it this way: rate limiting is trivial, yet none of the big ones who do this (LinkedIn, Reddit, NYT...) do it. Why? Because what you gain from moving people to the web, even those you ask fifty times, exceed what you lose from the attrition.

If that doesn't tell you how bad the web has become for people who make a living building things on it (but who aren't monopolies)...
I'm as web as they come, but when I left The Times I was putting a case together for a desktop app along small standard changes to accelerate it.
There's no guarantee that it would have happened, but I think it's only a matter of time before someone does it. Use the web only for top funnel feature-light use and drive people into the app.
I don't see the trend improving short of major reform in browsers & search.
