This is great! One thing I'd love to see is for press freedom measures (eg. @RSF_inter's Press Freedom Index rsf.org/en/world-press…) to account for digital gatekeeping. If 80+% of your traffic comes from Google or Facebook, you don't have media pluralism anymore.

Rather than farming out to a VLM, I've been wondering about farming out to the small LLMs of the people in your epistemic network. I don't know how well it would work, but building from trust connections rather than one big oracle strikes me as interesting.

This is at the "I think this is philosophically correct/interesting" one-page of MD with links stage. Those are some of the questions. Which personal network would you trust with what? Can models just communicate in English? Etc.
What interests me is building an architecture that supports a form of social cognition that somehow mirrors or overlays ours. We tend to think of ourselves as cognitive individualists but in practice without an epistemic network we're pretty stupid.
This leads us to create synthetic intelligence as often individualistic, as a translation of how we misunderstand our own intelligence. From that you get this idea of a worldwide all-knowing oracle. That's dumb and it concentrates power.
I'm curious about what an alternative would look like; I'm VERY VERY far from anything practical, or even just a bad demo :)

From what I've seen, it looks like Twitter made their announcement before the external audit had concluded… A high profile issue could have various causes (exploit, human failure…) but would also have severe consequences (eg. a dissident dies).

Something like Signal has benefited from very extensive review from credible experts. The risks that they would get it wrong are significantly lower than Twitter, who haven't been demonstrating overwhelming competence.
Early days alternative to Google Docs: docs.plus. Still missing quite a few features but faster and it would seem less buggy than GDocs. Promising!

It's not 100% of the solution, but I believe that if we create a few fundamental infrastructure public goods, they can generate a light surplus that can be used to fund more *and* have the governance to pick investments.

The web is awash in MFA sites, that range from garbage content farms to rabid misinfo. Why? Because it's profitable. What makes them profitable? Third-party cookies.
Whenever something is presented as done "to help the publishers" the question to ask is "which publishers?"

Personally, the last thing I would trust my privacy with is an AI agent. The whole point is to get to a place of trust, not to add flimsiness. Something like Permission Slip, with good UI and reliable humans is much more useful IMHO.
