This isn't primarily about protocol design, although it helps. The people who want to capture markets work on it every day, assuming a static property can stop them is a recipe for failure. Preventing this means treating capture resistance as a form of security: never done.

That's an interesting point but I'm not as confident as you are that transaction costs will keep dropping. They will only drop if the system isn't captured by intermediaries who benefit from taxing them. See what happened with advertising, app stores, etc.

We *could* (and should!) be driving transaction costs down, but for that to work we need to eliminate intermediaries, liberate infrastructure, and be uncompromising with capture-resistance!

Yes! The constant undervaluing of diversity/complexity and how essential they are is a defining problem. It's frustrating reading papers from decades ago about how simplifying systems leads to collapse, it's not like this is new research.

Indeed! Social structures are technology, and the naive way in which we do technology devalues them. Some notes:
1) this matches a broader pattern;
2) the converse is also true; and
3) Some people are working on this!

(1) On the broader pattern: We have treated "nature" as external to humankind, as if we wouldn't be part of it, which in turn gave us leave to exploit it.
We are now doing the same with sociality: it's external to our engineering and subject to extraction.

Much of what falls under "privacy" issues is really looking at social behaviour: most of that processing is only meaningful on groups.
And the interventions that this powers, to influence behaviour, is aligning people and simplifying groups, in effect extracting complexity.

Data can only be as good as your best theory. When reality can't punch you in the face, mountains of data give you nothing more than a fancy, expensive way to confirm your biases and answer the wrong questions.

I don't think you need intent to get that result. The people who have the most power over the web are obsessed with apps. They think the threat is from apps. Every effort goes into app parity. The result is shitty because that's not how the web works.
And it's also not what's threatening the web or what's causing underinvestment in web sites.
This is entirely the internal politics of two companies that are too big for anyone's good bleeding into the world.

I don't know if we're saying the same thing? I'm saying that we got massive investment to make the web compete with apps on apps' terms. Not that there was more investment in apps. Instead of webifying apps they insisted on appifying the web.
That's a deep misunderstanding of what the web is and an acute lack of vision about its future. From AMP to PWAs, from CWV to Fugu is a long list of heavy investment in solving the wrong problem, just to keep another faction at bay.
The result? This wasteland.

Even ads can be fixed! But if we want a healthy web the fix has to be structured so that 1) it doesn't encourage MFA sites and 2) only a sliver of value can go to intermediaries. The same shit with fewer cookie banners isn't a win, it's a waste of time.
I'm optimistic that we can fix all this. The difficulty is that we have to deal with entrenched power. Gotta burn down the technocracy.

App and Web people are having their money seized just the same. And it comes from the same pot. We suffer under the same capture, the eventual result is the same!
The web is badly in need of better governance, or even governance at all for that matter. Changing the few institutions we have could be a great first step.

I see no reason to believe it can't scale, but it has to be figured out and some problems aren't trivial (eg. federated blocking). It makes sense to limit influx.
