I don't know if we're saying the same thing? I'm saying that we got massive investment to make the web compete with apps on apps' terms. Not that there was more investment in apps. Instead of webifying apps they insisted on appifying the web.

That's a deep misunderstanding of what the web is and an acute lack of vision about its future. From AMP to PWAs, from CWV to Fugu is a long list of heavy investment in solving the wrong problem, just to keep another faction at bay. The result? This wasteland.
