Logic of Science is great, but I don't know if I'd recommend that as the learning step. It's pretty steep. For beginners, Morin's?
Oh, I don't in the least deny that, but I can easily imagine how one would get stuck trying to read it in order as an intro. 🙄

To what degree does the field (or process) crumble if you stop assuming universality?
But isn’t it precisely that (here, useful) fiction that in part defines a field’s culture? And then leads to the consequences you list?
Exactement!
In + to Simon's excellent points, I would contend that the universal assumption (at least cislunar) was in physics long before testability.
It may be too much of a historical perspective, but 25 centuries of assuming universality might just produce the conceptual tools and...
...attitude that supports intersubjective complexity, whereas other domains have a far more parochial history, at least until recently.
"It works" is enough for chess, though. At some point you win or you don't.

With some pixie dust we could use links that reference to a specific statement instead of the whole paper. It would make what's cited clear.

There are barriers to that. Chiefly that the HTML version would have to be canonical, and PDF dropped (or made very secondary).

I doubt this specific problem is enough to motivate that transition, even if other domains have already done it.

Yes. Not just for beginners, too. I've advocated for it a few times, but it's extra work and not normative so it rarely happens.
Also, when the text goes in it often seems obvious to those involved... who might forget not long later.
Back in ancient history, @timbray had made an annotated XML spec with that kind of information. It might be good to generalise that.
There should be a name for that position. Maybe just "reality-based".

That’s absurd… Two things can kill it: legal system change, or business strong-arming (as with Apple/Amazon).
It doesn’t. That said, I don’t know if you want to enter the fray. Some DRM opponents are really nasty, using words like «corporate whore»…

Styleable XML never worked; you could never do links and a bunch of other useful things like that. HTML can be deeply semantic, too.
♥ 1
Halt-and-catch-fire is only a benefit to lazy developers. It actively hurts end users (who get something broken they can do nothing about).

It’s the opposite: XML devs are lazy, they want things to blow up without testing. But it doesn’t work, it just hurts others :)

Yes — it works. Throw in role=doc-footnote on the object and it’s even borderline semantic!
That doesn’t work though, the inner `aside` gets pushed to after the `p`. There is magic in `object`.
I would guess that those who think otherwise have already left the ship.

Yeah, it really sucks. Pick one browser where it works, print to PDF, link PDF. Painful, stupid, but works. Eg cv.berjon.com.
Books, made of paper. If engaging enough they'll disconnect anything IME.

I'm guessing "Usage Elasticity" might capture the idea. When the dam breaks, your service collapses. I think FB Messenger has to be close.

Sort of, but for the Medium it's content more than network.

That's part of it, but it's not just for social media.

Ah ouais Notepad c'est bien minimaliste.
It's hard, but I would argue that Messenger shows there's lower even than the Facebook app.
Hahaha! C'est vrai que le BDSM était à la mode sur le Web de l'époque :-)

Visas approved, looks like you'll have to suffer my presence in the US a little while longer.

What type of talk at what type of conference and what process the speaker had to go through?
Me too! Where are you headed?
Whoa, have fun! I'm off to Champagne this afternoon :-)
Ha! My TLS is flawless!
There are many good reasons to strengthen our hand in naturalised ethics, this is one of them. But is AI on our top ten list of threats?
I do that often enough that I aliased them.

Seriously @Forbes, you need to retract. Not even the title makes any sense; the rest of the article is deranged mutant snake oil.

One interesting aspect of emojis is that they are written-only text, text with no obvious vocalisation. Is there linguistic precedent?

I think the mapping to spoken language is much closer. I presume writers/readers have a sound in their head when handling those.
I was precisely wondering how they are read? Do you mostly get the Unicode name?
It could be spoken if needed though.
👯♀️🔰👘🎏? (But good point)

That matches my understanding of Japanese (admittedly based on Murakami characters explaining how to pronounce their names). However...
...what you describe always has a vocalisation even if you don't know which. That happens in English too (eg "read").

Interesting. Is it only not meant to be vocalised, or does it have no obvious vocalisation? LMAO isn't meant to be, but I vocalise it easily
It's a lot less clear to me how to vocalise something like 😆 or 🤣.
Yes, they clearly have very strong semantics :-)
People vocalise maths all the time! It's embarrassingly overloaded, but people speak it. That said, knot theory notation seems hard to speak
Yeah, there's the small detail of financing the trip but I'll have something figured out by then!

I don't think we know for sure. But I would think they would could be read as whatever ancient Egyptian was.
But how would you know? There isn't a clear set of pronunciations that others would recognise.

According to Wikipedia, hieroglyphs were actually plain and simple phonetic. Like Finnish it would seem.

I dunno, I've told enough people to RTFM :-)
But photographs aren't verbal. I reckon the closest are facial expressions.
You see concepts? Like Sixth Sense Wittgenstein?
I wish it would. Varying glyphs makes them ambiguous, a common text mapping would address that.
If only we knew people involved in standards!
